NASA is developing an implant to prevent muscle atrophy in astronauts
Experience has shown that a long stay in weightlessness negative effect on muscle tissue condition. And despite the fact that the astronauts in orbit are engaged daily on special simulators, even after six months in space, they still need to go through a long course of rehabilitation. But the most important thing is that if in 2030 will be held on the planned mission to Mars, astronauts had flown just will not be able to walk on the planet. Therefore, NASA experts are developing a special implant, which will not allow to break down muscle tissue.
Who preparation itself, prevent muscle breakdown, is ready and even passed the first tests on rodents, who recently returned from the ISS. 40 rodents were divided into 2 groups, and each individual is implanted under the skin of a particular implant, which is automatically injected into the blood medication. Both groups have been sent to the ISS in December 2017. Group 1 returned to Earth in January, and the second earlier this month. As it turned out, despite the fact that the mice were not subjected to any particular physical activities in space, their muscle tissue is completely retained its function, and they are even without a rehabilitation course were able to move around on arrival at Earth. According to the head of the project Alessandro Gratonni,
"Given the early successes in the trial implant, we hope to test this method on the astronauts will be held in a few years, when the FDA will give its consent. But we will have time to prepare it to start flight to Mars. "
It should be noted that the implant may be useful in the world. For example, thanks to the Bluetooth receivers, Wi-Fi, the drug can be administered remotely. This can be useful in the case when the patient is away from the doctor and may forget to take the medication on their own. Also, the device can be used in the treatment of diabetes, as it allows to inject medication into the bloodstream smoothly and without sudden peaks. A "recharge" the implant will need 1 every few months (depending on frequency of use).
